This year I was lucky enough to go to Texas Furry Fiesta! Earlier last year I was invited to become staff to fill a need for a second web developer, which means for the work I’ll put in on the website I get a free hotel stay and entry to the con! Great deal! I just needed to fly myself out there. Honestly, I didn’t know what to expect. I was heading half way across the country alone and the only people I knew that were going were from Twitter.
I had a blast. The staff welcomed me with open arms. Path Hyena, the Con Chair, is a sweetheart. If you ever have a chance to meet him face to face, take advantage of it. I think he gave me a toothache. There are so many others that made this weekend special, I wish I could name them all, but they know who they are. Everything there is run very professionally and I’m glad to be part of that team.
While I was there I saw some great panels (The psychology panel was especially interesting), made a lot of new friends, and got to meet some long time online peeps. We had a casino night for charity where I learned how to play Craps, and got to see Path get hit with a pie not once, but twice! Plus, there was a coffee shop in the lobby! There are so many stories I could tell from this weekend, but there is just not enough room for them all. I didn’t get to any of the dances, and I’m a little disappointed I didn’t make it to Fox Amoore’s jazz night, but all in all I couldn’t have asked for a better time.
The trip home however, was another story. Towards the end of the convention we were getting weather reports of an ice storm. The entire city was covered in a sheet of ice. We weren’t going anywhere. Flight: cancelled, Shuttle: cancelled. I was stuck at the hotel with no where to go or anywhere to get there. Luckily, my new friend and fellow staffer Pestilynce was getting a room again for the night and invited me to stay there. He was also willing to give me a ride to the airport in the morning. Once again, i’m shown just how caring and wonderful furries are, always watching out for each other. I am so proud to be part of such a great family.
